On Nov. 8, 2016, residents at Life Care Center of Orange Park, Florida, tapped into their creative side with a fun activity – painting.
“It was a twist on the trendy Paint Night events,” explained Margery Flannagan, community liaison. “The activities department provided canvases, easels, paint and smocks, as well as delicious hors d’oeuvres to make the event extra special.”
Tricia Lichty, an activity assistant and artist, directed the participants on how to make their own “Starry Midnight” paintings. Stroke by stroke, she walked them through the process until each attendee had a beautiful painting he or she could keep.
“I only had the ability to use one hand and arm when I was painting,” said one resident. “I didn’t realize I had a talent in art. It made me feel useful.”
The response to the activity was very positive, and the facility plans to offer it again in the spring.
